---|---|---|---|
Solution:
Problem Category: Chipset Limitation VS Legacy OS design
Problem Description
================
Floppy Disk Drive is not accessible under Windows NT4.0 in PCA-6180 system with 512MBytes memory installed. This bug affects the following installations for PCA-6180 with 512MB RAM capacity only.
1. NT installation into SCSI hard disk drive
2. NT installation into hard disk drive connected with RAID adapter
3. After NT installation for IDE hard disk drive, floppy disk drive is not accessible.
Root Cause
===========
Since Windows NT 4.0 was developed prior to Intel 815E chipset, Microsoft found this bug regarding programming issue. When customers are using 512MB RAM with Intel 815E main boards, system cannot find floppy drive after NT installation until Service Pack 4 or higher is installed. (Using RAM capacity less than 512MB has no such issue.)
Solution
========
For more detail about solution for this bug, please refer to the following document in Microsoft Product Support Service (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?LN=EN-US).
AE suggestion is to use less RAM capacity to install NT and SP in advance. After that, use 512MB in the system then customers can get a NT system with 512MB RAM.
Additional Note
=============
This application issue is NOT design quality issue, but software using limitation for users' reference.
