Can I plug a Cisco Compatible SFP into a non-Cisco device?
Solution:
Yes, you can plug a Cisco Compatible Small Form Pluggable (SFP) into a non-Cisco device. When a SFP is plugged into a Cisco device, the Cisco device reads the SFP's EEPROM to check for Cisco specific information. If the Cisco device does not get the required information from the SFP, then the Cisco device will shutdown functionality to that SFP port. If the Cisco device reading the SFP does obtain the correct information from the SFP, then it will work. Our devices here at B&B Electronics do not require any specific information from the SFP in order to work. Thus, if you plug in a Cisco Compatible SFP into our device, it will work because our devices do not require any specific information for the SFP port to work appropriately. It will not matter if the Cisco specific information is there or not because our devices do not need the Cisco specific information.
