What could be causing the data loss on my Ethernet to Single Mode Fiber converter?
Solution:
Below is a tech note which explains issues that may arise if you are getting data loss. Calculating Fiber Loss Attenuation.pdf One of the most common reasons is if you are trying to go a much shorter distance on a single mode fiber cable than the transceiver is capable of. (Multimode fiber does not use attenuators) For example if you are using a Single mode fiber transceiver that allows you to go up to 20km and you are only using 600ft of cable, data loss can occur. There are calculations that can be done to see if you would need an attenuator and if so what the value of that attenuator would need to be. You need an attenuator for both directions on the fiber. We do not sell attenuators at B&B we would suggest going to Fiber Instrument sales. http://www.fiberinstrumentsales.com/
